UNA CORDA – AMAZING PIANO BY DAVID KLAVINS
UNA CORDA faithfully captures the special sound signature of a custom-made contemporary piano with one string per key – originally created by David Klavins in close collaboration with composer Nils Frahm. Whether you’re crafting melodies for film or simply introducing fresh elements into electronic, pop, or jazz, UNA CORDA offers a tone unlike anything your audience has heard before.
Unlike traditional pianos which generally have multiple strings per key (typically three for higher and two for lower pitches), the Una Corda piano has only one string per key. This unique design produces a softer and more intimate sound, which is different from the fuller, richer tones of conventional pianos. This piano is known for its distinctive, clear, and pure sound, making it particularly appealing for certain types of music compositions that seek a more delicate and subtle sonic palette.
Piano maker David Klavins invites us to his workshop in Vac, Hungary, for a calming concert. He is performing on three of his creations, including a tiny UNA CORDA piano and a massive vertical concert grand that he climbs a ladder to play because it’s 15-feet tall. While the UNA CORDA delights the ears with delicate notes, the vertical concert grand strikes a chord with deep, rich tones.
